It’s Thanks Giving Time!

It is time to give thanks for Community Harbor! Our dream of “Harbor Room”, a cancer resource center for our community, is becoming a reality! The Harbor Room will open its door in the Cambridge Medical Center in February. This time of year could not be more perfect to thank all of our generous supporters for making the dream come true. To date, our fund raising efforts have totaled $35,000. Our sincere thanks to all of you...

You are making a difference!

Anticipation

By Dennis Doran, President of the Cambridge Medical Center
The medical center is anticipating the opening of Harbor Room and what it truly will mean to the medical center. We have been excited that we are a part of the greater community’s effort to provide a unique resource to the residents of this area. The Harbor Room is a real life example of what Cambridge Medical Center’s mission is, which is “to serve our community by providing exceptional care as we prevent illness, restore health, and provide comfort to all who entrust us with their care.” What we want to be the best at is coordinating patient care, and being a health care resource center. I am convinced the impact the Harbor Room will have on the medical center will be awesome. The room will provide a deeper connection to our community, our staff, and to delivering our mission. It is the first step of many steps in which we will provide community benefits on our way to fulfilling our mission as a health care resource for our area.

The Journey

By Barbara Bergwall
During this time of New Beginnings, I reflect on the journey we have undertaken to see the Harbor Room become a reality. It’s amazing that we will have a respite for those souls facing cancer. We started in 2002 asking what the community might need. The answer was a resource room to which people could go when faced with cancer.

I know that when I faced my cancer, the Virginia Piper Living Room was a haven. It was a place to get information, a place to speak to knowledgeable volunteers about references, and a place I could calm myself for the next step of my treatment. I still love going there. It brings me peace.

This type of room is what we want and need for our community. Thank you for your support. Thank you for being the one in your community who will make someone’s cancer journey a bit easier. At this time of year, I am so thankful our community has embraced this wonderful vision to help those in a most difficult time. The Harbor Room is truly a blessing.

A Magical Night

The first fundraiser for Community Harbor was a banquet, which was held in September of 2003 at the Cambridge Evangelical Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall. Cancer survivors Barbara Bergwall, Pam Dolin and Dave Rosten shared their stories and were an inspiration to us all! We extend a huge thanks to the Isanti Lions for their $5,000 donation to Community Harbor that evening! It was a magical evening for us and far exceeded our fundraising expectations with a total of $13,000 raised for the event! Thank you to all who attended and supported our kick off event.

What a Gift!

Do you have a special friend or family member who has been touched by cancer? Are you struggling with what to give someone who seems to have everything? Are you looking for a birthday present for the person who needs nothing? The gift of a donation to Community Harbor in honor of that special person is the perfect solution! Note cards are available to be sent to specified individuals or picked up for you to wrap. Consider giving a gift that will make a difference!

Very Imporant Neighbor, Indeed!

Community Harbor had the great fortune of being introduced by Kathy Schaff, Executive Director of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce, to Duane Damon, general manager of Applebee’s.

Damon chose Community Harbor to be the beneficiary of its V.I.N. (Very Important Neighbor) Day, January3lst, 2004. That day was the last training exercise for it before opening, and many in the community were invited to a meal at no charge. Guests were asked to make a minimum donation of $5.00 to Community Harbor’s cancer resource center, Harbor Room.

On March 23rd, Community Harbor was presented with a check for $3,965; of that total, $750 was tips donated by the generous Applebee’s staff. Thank you, Applebee’s, for being our very important neighbor!

Chipping In

The first annual Community Harbor golf tournament was held at the Purple Hawk Golf Course on July 12th, 2004. Thanks to all who were “Chipping in Fore the Cancer Resource Center!” We had 17 teams of golfers and lots of great donated gifts for the raffle and auction. It was a fun event and raised $8,000 for the Harbor Room!

We extend a grateful “Thank You” for gifts received through November 30, 2004

Volunteers Make Our Center a Better Place

Community Harbor has several opportunities for those of you who are interested in volunteering. Our community cancer resource center, Harbor Room, is scheduled to open in February. We need cancer survivors to help with volunteer staffing to greet visitors and help them with locating resource materials. Community Harbor is looking for those who love to help plan fundraising events. We have three fundraisers per year: banquet, golf tournament, and a community event. We would love to benefit from your experience and energy! If you are willing to help in any way, please click here for more information.
