Harbor Room’s Mission & GoalMission StatementThe Harbor Room is a resource center providing information and support for community members who are confronting cancer in their lives or the lives of loved ones. Goal StatementThe Harbor Room will provide cancer related resource materials, resource referrals, research, advocacy and supportive programming. The Harbor Room will strive to provide a warm and caring volunteer-run and community-based environment. Motto“Knowledge is power!” 3rd Annual BanquetFriday, October 27th Community Harbor held their third annual banquet. Approximately $5,800 was raised which will be used to support Harbor Room. We had two guest speakers, Gail Mattison and Wanda Anderson, who spoke of their cancer experiences. We also watched an excellent video produced by Nathan Tatro. Thank you to everyone who attended. An update from the DirectorCommunity Harbor was fortunate to receive a $10,500 grant from the Randy Shaver Research and Community Fund in December. The grant money will be used to start three new Harbor Room programs for cancer patients and survivors, and those supporting them. They are "Beautiful You", "Journaling Through the Storm", and "Self Expression Through Art". See the Harbor Room Update for more details. Community Harbor also received a $1,000 grant from Cambridge Wal-Mart. We will be using that grant money to purchase a flat-panel TV for Harbor Room. Visitors will be able to watch health-related, educational programs and also a relaxing scenes channel. My goal is to continue to make Harbor Room a place of comfort. Harbor Room will continue to offer male-only support groups on the second Monday of the month from 7:00- 8:30pm. Jim Donahue is the facilitator and he invites all men to attend. Information about all support groups will be in local newspapers. Harbor Room volunteers are not only assisting visitors who come to our room, they're also going out into the community as well. We had a request to visit a resident in a nearby nursing home, as well as requests to visit patients who are here in the hospital. I'm also happy to report that portable CD players will soon be available to any cancer patient to use while at the medical center. Volunteers, or myself, will deliver the player and/or CDs upon request. Wishing all of you a happy and healthy 2007! - Bonnie Gutzkow-Bowman, Director

"Beautiful You"Provides cancer patients currently going through treatment an opportunity to learn make-up application, beauty tips, and ways to deal with hair loss. All participants will receive free make-up. This program will be held monthly. "Journaling Through the Storm"Provides cancer patients and survivors, and those supporting them, an opportunity to express themselves through creative journaling. All participants will receive a free journal. This program will be held twice a month. "Self Expression Through Art"Provides cancer patients and survivors, and those supporting them, an opportunity to use different art mediums to creatively express themselves.
