New Programming

“Beautiful You” and “Journaling through the Storm” are two new programs offered on a monthly basis at Harbor Room.

“Beautiful You” provides make-up application instruction and offers various options for women dealing with hair loss while undergoing cancer treatment. Participants receive approximately $200 worth of quality Mary Kay make-up plus supplies at no charge. Anyone currently undergoing treatment, or have completed treatment within the past six months, can attend. The program is held on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 6:30pm. If you’re interested in attending a session, please call to RSVP.

“Journaling through the Storm” offers participants instruction with various writing exercises and discussions. The benefits of journal writing will also be discussed. This program is held the first and third Thursday of the month from 5:30-6:30pm. Anyone touched by cancer, in any way, is welcome to attend. Participants will each receive a journal at no charge. After each session there will be instruction and supplies available, also at no charge, for decorating and making the journal unique to each person.

Both programs were made possible by a grant from the Randy Shaver Research and Community Fund. For more information about either program, call us at 763-689-8415.

An update from the Director

Beginning in May I will be facilitating a new Women’s Only Cancer Support Group. It will be held on the first Thursday of the month at 2pm. The meetings will focus on female issues in relation to living with the effects of cancer. Any female dealing with cancer, in any way, is invited to attend.

It’s been very rewarding developing all the new programs for Harbor Room. Community Harbor Board Member, Sue Slater, has been especially helpful working with me to expand our services. We are currently working on developing our art therapy programs. More information on that program will be posted in our Summer Newsletter.

We’ve been busy this past winter. Our service related visitors were:

One of my goals as director of Harbor Room is to continue to reach out to those individuals dealing with the effects of cancer. We’re here to help take the burden off however we can.

Enjoy the weather.

Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser

On Saturday, March 24th Community Harbor held a pancake breakfast fundraiser at Applebee’s in Cambridge.

Applebee’s was generous enough to host the event for the local non-profit. Community Harbor funds Harbor Room through various fundraising efforts.

The board members and other volunteers served the delicious breakfast to hungry patrons.

Almost $2,000 was raised and approximately 175 were served.

It was a wonderful morning.

We offer a wide assortment of quality wigs, hats, head scarves, mastectomy bras, prosthetics and drain tube belts to individuals dealing with cancer, at no charge.

Harbors of Hope

On Friday, June 15th Community Harbor (supporter of Harbor Room) will hold their first annual “Harbors of Hope” event at the Cambridge Fairgrounds.

The event will raise funds to secure Harbor Room’s permanent location at Cambridge Medical Center.

Teams will form and they’ll select a city located on a waterfront and build their site around that cities known theme. Teams can sell items and/or food, play games and provide an interactive, fun-filled evening for fellow team members, survivors and community members.

The event will be held from 5pm to 1am. The night will include entertainment and a harbor fashion show. There will also be two local bands performing early in the evening.

All proceeds from this event will be used to support Harbor Room.

For more information, call Harbor Room at (763) 689-8415.

Harbor Room Happenings

When cleaning out your closets please don’t forget that Harbor Room is in need of hats and caps for male cancer patients.

Thanks to all those who contribute to Harbor Room, in any way. It’s such a blessing witnessing our community coming together for the good of others.

We now have lots of fun summer hats and headscarves, donated and made by wonderful individuals.

Now when patients and their loved ones are waiting for an appointment or have time between appointments they can now come to Harbor Room and watch TV comfortably on our new flat panel TV that we purchased using a grant from Cambridge Wal-Mart.

Patients and their loved ones can also now request headphones and music cd’s while they’re here at the medical center. Someone from Harbor Room will bring the cd player to the person along with cd’s from our music library. When they’re done they can return it to Harbor Room or we’ll come pick it up.

Ben Franklin has designated their dinosaur donation display to go to Harbor Room. We really appreciate their consideration and support.
